Moving from Tally to Zoho Books: A Practical Migration Checklist

Moving from Tally to Zoho Books: A Practical Migration Checklist

Moving your accounts from desktop software like Tally to a cloud platform such as Zoho Books is one of the best upgrades a growing business or CA practice can make. Done carelessly, though, a migration can leave you with mismatched balances and months of clean-up. A little planning avoids that.

1. Decide your cut-over date

Pick a clean starting point – usually the beginning of a financial year, quarter or month. Everything before this date is “historical data”; everything after is entered directly in Zoho Books.

2. Clean up before you export

  • Remove duplicate or unused ledgers.
  • Reconcile bank accounts up to the cut-over date.
  • Confirm outstanding receivables and payables with parties.
  • Check GST details for customers and vendors.

3. Map your chart of accounts

Ledger groups in your old software will not always match account types in Zoho Books. Map each ledger to the right account type so that your reports come out correctly from day one.

4. Set up opening balances carefully

Opening balances are where most migration errors happen. Enter them as on the cut-over date and make sure the trial balance in Zoho Books matches the closing trial balance from your previous software.

5. Validate, then go live

Compare key reports – trial balance, outstanding receivables and payables, stock and GST summaries – before you start day-to-day work in Zoho Books.

If you would rather have experts handle it, our data migration service covers migration from Tally, Excel or other software, data validation, opening balances and historical data.
